A Little Piece of Texas

10/16/2009

This weekend is one of the craziest weekends in Dallas every year.  It’s the last weekend of the Texas State Fair and TX-OU weekend – when the fans of the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners descend on Dallas for the Red River Shootout!

For those readers not from the Lone Star State, you’ve probably heard a little about the importance of football in Texas…  This weekend is a perfect example.  It’s serious business and brings in a significant amount of money to the local economy.

I’ve lived in Dallas for a long time, but as my Dad would say, “I don’t have a dog in that hunt,” so I typically get out of town or lay low avoiding the malls and staying in whatever part of town is likely to be least popular with the tourists!

Here’s a little taste of the State Fair 2009 for those not from around here! :)

Ummm… you know I gotta say it…
BOOMER SOONER!

Also, I’m surprised I’m saying this – I’m excited to revisit Dallas in a few weeks. Honestly, I believe the excitement is to catch up with you in person and experience “your” Dallas… I have a feeling I’ll like it!

Well, you can take the girl out of Oklahoma, but you can’t take the Oklahoma out of the girl, right?! ;)

I’m glad to hear that you’re excited to come to visit… You’re also my first houseguest! I can’t wait to show off my little piece of East Dallas!

Hi Angela (from an old friend/colleague). I’ve really enjoyed reading your posts (ever since I noticed on facebook that you had your own blog). I was going to comment on another post you had when I noticed this most recent one on the Texas State Fair. After seeing your pictures and reading the following article, I regret never having made it up there in the brief time I was in Texas!

Hi Saeed! It’s great to hear from you. Thanks visiting and for the link – Come fry with me: A new way to serve a ball of butter! The Texas State Fair is definitely a sight to see… It’s like a piece of authentic Texas in the middle of Dallas each fall. Thank goodness it’s just once a year! Oh, and the Fried Butter tasted a lot like the inside of a buttered biscuit! :)

Wow, that sounds fantastic–and cardiovascularly troubling! :)
